Volunteer of the Month
September – Hazel Fiedler
This month we are honoring Hazel Fiedler as Lincoln City Cultural Center’s volunteer of the month. Not only is this extraordinary young woman extremely responsible, helpful, intelligent and compassionate but she is also really, really good with kids. She volunteered for the full two weeks of art camp this year and worked so hard to make sure everyone had a good time and got the help they needed with their projects. Without her, visual arts director, Krista Eddy, would not have made it through the two weeks. Her sweet personality is a joy to be around and she’s always keen to help out with wherever is needed. In the past year, she has also volunteered many times with the Taft High honors group to make art kits and she has also been an important part of the Saturday Art Smart program.
We are so grateful for all the time that she has given to young artists in our community. THANK YOU HAZEL.
August – Kathy Burke
Kathy Burke, New Moon Yoga host extraordinaire, is August’s volunteer of the month. A relative newcomer to Lincoln City, Kathy and her husband Tim moved here from Salt Lake City in 2021. She wanted to find a yoga studio with a strong sense of community, and quickly found exactly that at New Moon Yoga, where she began hosting classes when the studio re-opened to the public post-Covid in 2022. We love Kathy’s warmth, her awesome, slightly irreverent sense of humor, and her commitment to helping us build a thriving and welcoming community. When the yoga studio was closed during plaza construction, Kathy hosted yoga classes three days per week at her home so that New Moon Yogis could continue practicing together. She hosts monthly restorative yoga/ potluck Sunday brunches at her home, free and open to all, where attendees receive the added benefit of enjoying the fruits of her culinary skills (also prominently featured at the New Moon Yoga Day fundraising event in July), and admiring her home garden. Thank you, Kathy – you are truly and deeply appreciated!
July – Janet Barber
Our July Volunteer of the Month, Janet Barber, is beloved for her positive outlook as well as her impressive sewing skills. Janet has led the volunteer effort to create our inventory of magical cloaks, with their special fabrics and beautiful buttons, which help to fund her favorite program, the children’s Art Kits. She’s part of the volunteer crew that helps to assemble the kits, which are offered by donation at the Cultural Center and through other community groups. “She’s so passionate about the art kits and doing things for her community,” said Visual Arts Director Krista Eddy. “I think Janet perceives all the art kits kids as her own grandkids. She’s incredibly positive and inclusive, remembering special things about everyone, volunteers and staff. She has a giant laugh that is infectious.”
June – Tony Hugeback
How do we love Tony? Let us count the many, many ways that Tony Hugeback has given his time, intelligence, and experience to advance the mission of the Cultural Center. From the custom storage in the Elizabethan Room and the drop-down stairs to the “tech desk,” the construction of outdoor art like the “Before I Die” Wall and the Teeny Weeny Gallereeny, changing the filters in the attic and installing new holders for the Kiwanis flags – his handiwork is everywhere. And when things go wrong or something breaks, there’s nothing like the relief of a text from Tony, saying “I’ll be there.” He’s been here for us for 14 years — as a member since 2007 and a volunteer for more than a decade, serving thousands of hours although he rarely stops to record them. He’s THAT kind of hero. Thank you, Tony!
May – Susan Bard
May’s Volunteer of the Month is Susan Bard, a retired graphic designer and artist whose cheerful influence can be felt all over the Cultural Center. From leading Washed Ashore school field trips to building beautiful art kits, and from bartending at gallery receptions to teaching kids at summer art camp – Susan has been a key to our visual arts success. She’s lent her talent to promotional materials and maps that feature culture at the core. She’s known for her generous smile and positive energy as well as her creativity and dedication. Thank you, Susan.
April – Ruth Hugeback
April’s Volunteer of the Month is Ruth Hugeback. Cultural Center members since 2007, Ruth and her husband, Tony, are known for their intelligent and artistic approach to projects all over the building. We count on Ruth’s crucial work as the “Director of Gallery Tags,” an assistant to Visual Arts Director Krista Eddy during exhibit installation week. Using a Word template, Ruth turns a handwritten inventory list into those clean, clear informational tags attached to the wall beside the art. It requires patience and a strict attention to detail (and the ability to spell words like gesso, assemblage and tempera). An artist who makes silk scarves, among other things, Ruth is leader of the Artists Studio Association and a former LCCC Members Gift Shop Volunteer, too. And remember Greta’s Teeny Weeny Gallereeny, the “little art library” that we installed in front of the west entrance? Ruth helped to make that happen, too. Thank you, Ruth!
March – Gray Eubank
Please join us in a standing ovation for our March Volunteer of the Month: Gray Eubank. Since 2018, Gray has been a driving force behind the substantial improvements in sound, lights and design for all our performing arts programs. If you enjoyed the great sound in our Plaza Party Tent series in 2021, loved the lights on the Washed Ashore jellyfish or admired the way we can control our projector and Bluetooth speakers – that’s all because of Gray, and the thousands of hours he has devoted to elevating the quality of the Cultural Center experience. A professional actor, director and producer, as well as a musician with the band Sitka (and a founding member of New Moon Yoga), Gray is truly a renaissance man. We’re so lucky to have him in the “crow’s nest” and all over the Cultural Center. Thank you, Gray!
