On the Path of Public Art

In the spring of 2021, Niki Price embarked on an adventure with a dual mission — a hike on along the Oregon Coast Trail that included visiting hundreds of pieces of public art. Niki, the executive director of the Lincoln City Cultural Center, announced her goal to walk the trail from border to border, Washington to California, while exploring a new online tool called the Oregon Coast Public Art Trail.

Her plan, as outlined on this page, on Facebook and in (now a little embarrassing) press releases, was to hike the OCT in 10 sections and create “art-interaries” for other trekkers to enjoy. Niki had the support of the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, the staff of the Lincoln City Cultural Center and, by the end of 2021, a whole bunch of generous sponsors who pledged donations to the Center’s Plaza project.

Despite all this support and generosity, Niki’s “On the Path of Public Art” project was not completed in 2021. Or in 2022. No, Niki has not been stuck in a tent on the beach north of Seaside for the past two years. Instead, she’s been anchored at home in Lincoln City, meddling with a melange of middle-age issues ranging from arthritis and a Baker’s cyst to weather, car trouble and “sandwich generation” caregiving that have made these multi-day hikes difficult to complete.

To all the people who have been following, watching and asking about this project, she says “thank you.” And, that she is making slow but steady progress, one day hike at a time.

For Niki, this is about pursuit of a long-held personal goal: to walk the 425-mile long Oregon Coast Trail. But she’s also hoping to highlight the vital role that public art can play in community and economic development, and to bring that message home to the Lincoln City Cultural Center. The nonprofit is in the midst of a capital campaign for the Cultural Plaza, the redevelopment of the grounds around the center with accessible gathering places and artistic elements.

Dubbed “On the Path of Public Art,” Niki’s adventure is sponsored by the Lincoln City Cultural Plaza and the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, developer of the art trail map. If everything goes as planned, she’ll contribute 4- and 7-day “art-ineraries” that can be used by other section hikers of the OCT. You’re invited to follow Niki’s progress through her blog posts throughout the year.

Niki’s not just raising awareness — she’s also raising funds for the Cultural Plaza. All the pledges and donations from “On the Path of Public Art” will go toward Plaza construction. Every bit helps, of course, and your donations are tax deductible. But if we raise at least $5000, we’ll sponsor a public art pedestal on the grounds in Phase 1 (happening now!). For information about the Plaza, call the LCCC at 541-994-9994.
