The Cultural Center’s Executive Director, Niki Price, has embarked on an adventure with a dual mission — a hike on along the Oregon Coast Trail that includes visiting hundreds of pieces of public art. With help from a new map and resource called the the Oregon Coast Public Art Trail, she’ll attempt to hoof it from border to border, from the Columbia River down to California, and see ALL the public art along the way. Note (9/8/21): Originally, Niki hoped to finish by the end of 2021. Injuries, family events and LCCC commitments have kept her off the trail for most of the season, but she’s still determined to complete this life goal.
Niki will begin on the north end of the coast, at Fort Stevens State Park, to complete the “art-inerary” for Section 1, including Seaside and Cannon Beach. She plans to repeat the effort in each of the 10 official OCT sections. Each trek is expected to take three or four days, but it will depend on the weather and other factors, including plover habitat, tides, daylight hours, and campsite availability. There is also the matter of damage from the 2020 wildfires and recent winter storms, both of which downed trees and otherwise created havoc along the trail. But Niki will be equipped with camping gear and be flexible to change her plans as necessary.

For Niki, this is about pursuit of a long-held personal goal: to walk the 425-mile long Oregon Coast Trail. But she’s also hoping to highlight the vital role that public art can play in community and economic development, and to bring that message home to the Lincoln City Cultural Center. The nonprofit is in the midst of a capital campaign for the Cultural Plaza, the redevelopment of the grounds around the center with accessible gathering places and artistic elements.
Dubbed “On the Path of Public Art,” Niki’s adventure is sponsored by the Lincoln City Cultural Plaza and the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, developer of the art trail map. If everything goes as planned, she’ll contribute 4- and 7-day “art-ineraries” that can be used by other section hikers of the OCT. You’re invited to follow Niki’s progress through her blog posts throughout the year.
Niki’s not just raising awareness — she’s also raising funds for the Cultural Plaza. All the pledges and donations from “On the Path of Public Art” will go toward Plaza construction. Every bit helps, of course, and your donations are tax deductible. But if we raise at least $5000, we’ll sponsor a public art pedestal on the grounds in Phase 1, scheduled for construction in Spring 2022. For information about the Plaza, call the LCCC at 541-994-9994.
