Do you remember the game where a message is whispered from one person to the next around a circle? When it gets to the end, the phrase is very different than it was when it began. This is the premise behind the Chessman Gallery’s new group exhibit, but instead of being auditory it is visual. Each artist has rendered their version of the piece before them and displayed together, you will be able to see how the image changes depending on the style, process and mood of each artist. The show will be open from 10 am to 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday through Feb. 11.

“This exhibit is absolutely an experiment”, says Visual Arts Director, Krista Eddy, “We were wondering what would happen if we asked a group of artists to try out this idea of recreating a work in their own style but inspired by the artwork before them in the circle just like in the Telephone game but visually and we all had so much fun doing it! It was such an interesting and successful endeavor”.

In the two circles that are presented in this exhibit, you will see how some themes and colors stayed while others were left behind. You will see how different perspectives, styles and artistic mediums can change the subject matter drastically and you will see the depth of creativity alive in local coastal artists.

Each circle begins with a photograph of a local spot. This was organized deliberately as it is the only way that photographers would be able to participate due to the nature of their work. And then each circle continues on to host a great range of diversity in mediums from painting to clay work, fiber arts to mosaic and assemblage to spray paint art. And the age range of this group of artists is just as diverse: you will see work by artists from 10 years old to 75 years old.

We hope that you will be able to join us for the opening reception of this exciting new exhibit at the Chessman Gallery, inside the Lincoln City Cultural Center on Friday, January 5th, and as an added bonus the Pacific Artists Alliance Gallery and ASA, within walking distance, across 6th street, will also be hosting a reception for their brand new display.
