Northern Lights: The Culture of Norway’s Kven & Sami People

St. James Santiago School will host an engaging evening of indigenous culture from Arctic Norway on Friday, October 4, at 6:30 p.m., at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Six women of Scandinavian heritage, including four visiting from Norway, will present traditional Sami and Kven music, history, storytelling, songs, facts and fun, including Sami joik, a unique vocal, melodic pattern. Award-winning Norwegian storyteller Stina Fagertun, cultural singer Catrine Petersen, musician Trine Strand, Sami culturist Hege Renate Nilsen, lur player Joan Haaland Paddock, and Kven expert Anita Schnacky will share their knowledge of indigenous Sami and Kven people and the ways they lived in Arctic Scandanavia. Admission is $10 for adults; children 14 and under are free. Refreshments and a Sami craft activity will follow. Tickets are available online at www.lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or at the door.
